Why remove your implants?

Our plastic surgeons remove implants for our patients for a variety of reasons. Below are a few of the most common motivations cited:

A rupture. If an MRI revealed a rupture of a silicone breast implant, you’ll need to have it removed as soon as possible.
Complications. If you’re experiencing capsular contracture (when hardened scar tissue forms around the implant), implant migration, or rippling skin around the implant, they should be removed.
Breast cancer. Women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer must have their implants removed, as their presence can interfere with treatment.
New aesthetic goals. If your implants are too large for your lifestyle, or you simply want to restore your smaller, natural breasts, implant removal may be the right approach. In these cases, our surgeons may recommend a simultaneous lift as well to address any sagging skin after the removal.

What to expect

The specific steps involved in your breast implant removal will depend on your unique needs and the type of implant you have. In general, the surgery is done under general anesthesia and can take anywhere from one to two hours. To begin, we will re-open the original incision. From there, you have a number of options:

Implant removal. This is the most straightforward approach, during which we will remove the implant and any scar tissue.
Capsulectomy. During a standard capsulectomy, we will remove the implant and the capsule that surrounds it. It’s a two-part technique. First, we will cut into the capsule to remove the implant. Then, we will remove the remaining capsule.
En bloc capsulectomy. During this surgery, we will remove the capsule without cutting into it, thus removing the implant and the capsule at the same time.

What is en bloc capsulectomy?

In French, en bloc means “all together.” En bloc capsulectomy involves removing the breast implant along with the scar tissue capsule at the same time – without first opening the capsule. This ensures that nothing inside the capsule can leak out into the surrounding tissue. Our plastic surgeons typically recommend this approach when a woman has been diagnosed with an implant rupture or capsular contracture.

Alternatively, a standard capsulectomy involves removing the breast implant and capsule using a different technique. With this approach, a plastic surgeon will first create an incision in the capsule and remove the implant from the scar tissue. Once the implant is out of the body, they will remove the capsule. This might be necessary if any portion of the capsule has fused to the body and must be left in place to ensure the patient’s safety.

Recovery

After breast implant removal, you can expect some bruising, swelling, and discomfort for a few weeks. You will need to stay home from work for several days while you complete the healing process, and your final results will be apparent in a few months.
