Good candidates for upper eyelid surgery are typically individuals who are in good health and have realistic expectations. Most are 35 years or older, but if baggy eyelids or droopy eyelids run in your family, you may decide to have the surgery done sooner. What does the procedure entail?

Upper eyelid surgery usually involves making minimal incisions to remove any unwanted fat from the upper eyelids. That said, there is no ‘one’ technique that can be applied to every patient. An upper eyelid procedure can be performed with either local or general anesthesia. The first step involves identifying the creases on each upper eyelid. A treatment plan can then be created that addresses the issue in the eyes but also leaves enough tissue for proper eyelid function. In some cases, a small portion of the orbicularis oculi (the muscle that controls eyelid movement) needs to be removed. However, this is totally safe.

After the treatment is completed, the incisions are closed with sutures. All incisions are made in the creases of the eyelids, making them less noticeable to others.

What is the recovery process like?

As an outpatient procedure, patients can return home immediately following their upper blepharoplasty procedure. The treatment almost always involves anesthesia, meaning that patients will need to arrange for someone to give them a ride home and ideally help them around the house for the first few days. Patients should rest as much as possible during the first few weeks and keep their heads elevated, both while awake and sleeping.

It is normal for patients to develop side effects such as swelling and bruising. These effects can temporarily obstruct the patient’s vision, but they will gradually fade away over the course of a few weeks. Most patients are able to get back to their normal routines within 10 days of the procedure. That said, patients must make sure to avoid strenuous activities, such as exercise, for at least two weeks.

While the results from this treatment are considered to be incredibly long-lasting, patients may need repeat treatments over time as the aging process progresses.
