All features of the face play a role in defining our aesthetics and confidence. One such feature is the area under the eyes. Often referred to as “tear troughs”, these hollow regions under the eyes can give patients an appearance that does not properly represent them, making it difficult for them to be social and meet new people.

Fortunately, injectable fillers can treat volume loss in this area, reversing years of aging with a short, simple treatment. These fillers are derived from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body. They are designed to help patients maintain a natural youthfulness as they get older.

Dr. Paul and the team at Austin Face and Body have years of experience using tear-trough fillers for eye bag treatment in Austin. These potent dermal fillers can successfully restore volume to the under-eye region without requiring surgery. The results from the procedure can last up to 12 months, and it is performed on an outpatient basis.

What are tear trough fillers?

A Tear trough filler procedure is a cosmetic protocol that utilizes hyaluronic acid-based fillers (Restylane and Juvederm) to reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. These deep tear troughs result in shadows that look like dark circles.

Tear trough fillers are designed to aid patients in reversing a sunken-in appearance and deep indentations in the under-eye region. Patients with this condition may notice visible blood vessels that lie just below the surface of their skin, making the appearance of tear troughs even more pronounced. Deep tear troughs can also cause a separation between the cheeks and lower eyelids, giving the eyes a sunken-in look and exacerbating aging in the face.

It’s no secret that the skin in this area is some of the thinnest on the body. As such, great care must be taken when selecting a dermal filler and having it injected into the face. Dr. Paul has many years of experience using these injectables, allowing him to help his patients achieve their ideal look.

Who is an ideal candidate for tear trough fillers?

The biggest advantage of this procedure is that it gives patients the ability to avoid undergoing surgery to reposition fat in the lower eyelid.

Ideal candidates for the procedure are patients who:

  • Are of sound body and mind
  • Are struggling with moderate to severe sagging under the eyes
  • Have healthy, thick skin
  • Have experienced some amount of volume loss in the under-eye area
  • Have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure

What issues can tear-trough fillers address?

  • Dark circles and noticeable shadows under the eyes resulting from volume loss
  • A hollow look in the tear trough area, giving the patient ‘deep-set eyes’
  • Fat pockets in the lower eyelids
  • Under-eye bags that develop as a result of the natural aging process, weight loss, or genetics

What does the procedure entail?

Eye bag treatment starts by applying a numbing cream to the under-eye region and marking the treatment sites. During the treatment, patients have the option to sit upright or reclined. The procedure usually takes no longer than 10 to 20 minutes to carry out.

Patients typically experience minimal discomfort with this treatment. Usually, only one syringe is needed to address the patient’s issues, but those with deeper tear troughs may need two syringes or more. After the treatment, patients must avoid vigorous activity (exercise) for at least 24 hours. That said, patients can get back to their regular routines immediately following the procedure.

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers have a natural formulation, allowing patients to achieve a younger, revitalized look without leaving any obvious signs of having cosmetic work done.

Recovery and aftercare

It is normal for patients to experience some bruising and swelling following the treatment. If the discomfort from these effects is bothersome, patients can perform a light massage on the treatment area to mitigate this. Patients will be given more information about this when discharged from the procedure.

Additional steps, such as applying a cold and hot compress before going to bed and sleeping with extra pillows to keep the head elevated, can significantly reduce bruising.

Patients should come in for a follow-up visit about two weeks after the treatment. By this time, any swelling and bruising will have faded away, and patients will notice a brighter, more radiant complexion. The separation line between the under-eye region and the cheek becomes less defined.

While the effects of this treatment are remarkable, they will wear off over time. As such, it is recommended that patients come in for regular treatments to maintain their results over time.
