Chin augmentation in Austin with our skilled surgeons will enhance the contour of the chin and jawline, sculpting a more proportionate and attractive profile. This is usually accomplished by surgically placing an implant on the chin bone. However, we also offer a number of complementary procedures and non-surgical approaches that can augment the chin as well.

Chin augmentation: A key component of facial harmony

Chin augmentation, also known as genioplasty, is designed to enhance the chin, neck, and jawline contours. When this area of the face is undefined or underdeveloped, it can have a significant effect on facial harmony and attractiveness. For example, a small or recessed chin can make a large nose appear even larger.

By augmenting the chin with a carefully selected and sized implant, our facial plastic surgeons in Austin can restore a natural balance between your features. Because the chin has such a dramatic effect on the rest of your face, this procedure is often performed alongside other facial plastic surgeries, including rhinoplasty, neck lift, and facelift

What can a chin augmentation do for you?

Augment a recessed or weak chin. When your chin is weak, recessed or underdeveloped, it can make your neck look fleshy and full. A prominent implant can restore a more balanced look.

Improve facial proportions. When the chin is too small, it can throw off the rest of your facial proportions. Increasing the prominence of the chin can make the nose, cheeks and forehead appear more harmonious.

Fix submental fullness. Also known as a “double chin,” submental fullness is often caused by a weak chin. When this occurs, a well-sized chin implant can improve fullness in the area.

Restore a more youthful facial appearance. Loss of definition around the chin is a major contributor to facial aging. By restoring a more contoured jaw and neck area, our facial plastic surgeons can take years off your appearance.

A custom approach to enhancing your face

During your private consultation for a chin implant in Austin at our office, our facial plastic surgeons will design a chin enhancement surgery that is tailored to your anatomy, needs and cosmetic goals. We will talk to you about the various implants available – and how the different options will impact the look and shape of your face.

Once we’ve chosen an implant, we will discuss surgical techniques. In some cases, we may recommend combining your chin augmentation with an additional procedure – such as a facelift or submental liposuction. These extra steps will ensure that you emerge from surgery with your expectations realized.

Am I a candidate?

A chin augmentation is a versatile procedure that can be an ideal solution for many patients. Of course, it can help Austin men and women who are concerned about the size, shape and position of their chin. But, we also tend to recommend the procedure to patients who are concerned with general facial aging, a weak jaw, or a large nose. Addressing contour issues in the chin area can often resolve those concerns as well.

The procedure: What to expect

Your chin augmentation will begin with a small incision beneath your chin. Through that opening, we will insert sizers to ensure that the size and shape of the final implant is correct. In some cases, we will carve the chosen implant to ensure a custom fit.

Once the correct implant has been finalized, we will create a pocket beneath the skin to hold the implant in place. This is a critical part of the procedure. If the pocket is incorrectly sized, it can result in a crooked implant.

Once the pocket is complete, we will place the implant and carefully close the incision in layers to ensure a virtually imperceptible scar.

Recovery

You can expect bruising, swelling, and discomfort for a period of time after your chin augmentation. During the first few weeks, you’ll be instructed to massage the incision daily and avoid strenuous activity. Within three months, most residual swelling and bruising will be gone, and the final results of your surgery will be apparent.

What are the alternatives to chin implants?

In addition to chin implants, we offer a number of additional procedures that can enhance the chin, jaw, and neck area. They include:

  • Fat transfer. During a fat transfer, we will remove fat from another area of the body and inject it into the chin. It’s minimally-invasive and has a shorter recovery time when compared to a traditional chin augmentation.
  • Non-surgical chin augmentation. Some of our patients opt for a non-surgical chin enhancement, which involves using temporary fillers – such as Radiesse – to augment the chin and jawline. This quick treatment results in no downtime, but the results are not permanent. As such, you’ll require repeat injections to maintain your new contours.
  • Submental liposuction. This procedure is designed to address the “double chin” fullness that often accompanies a weak or underdeveloped chin. Rather than an alternative to chin augmentation, this procedure is typically performed simultaneously.

FAQ

Will I need to replace my chin implant?

Unlike breast implants (which need to be replaced routinely), your chin implant is composed of solid silicone and should last a lifetime.

Will my scars be visible?

Because our facial plastic surgeons employ an external incision for chin implants, there will be visible scars. However, any openings will be carefully placed beneath the chin so they are hidden from view. In addition, we use advanced wound closure techniques to minimize scarring and ensure a discreet result.

When can I return to work and my normal exercise routine?

You will be able to return to work about five days after surgery. Most patients need to wait two weeks before resuming strenuous exercise.

What are the risks of chin augmentation?

All surgeries carry a degree of risk. With chin augmentation, rare complications are possible and include infection or the need for the implant to be removed.
