- Breast Reconstruction
Will my breasts look the same if I only do one side? Do I need bilateral mastectomies for symmetry?
These are questions that come up at every new breast cancer reconstruction consult. My answer always revolves around oncologic safety and the patient’s desire for a risk reduction mastectomy on the non-cancer side. Wonderful symmetry can absolutely be obtained if just one breast undergoes a mastectomy and reconstruction. This sweet patient is 7 months out from a unilateral left-sided nipple sparing mastectomy with immediate implant reconstruction. Her incision is in the fold of the left breast and well hidden. She DID NOT undergo any surgery on the right breast. She is cancer free and back to living her life!!!
While this patient looks amazing after surgery on just one breast, it is important to know all of your options when considering breast reconstruction! A mastectomy and reconstruction can be covered by insurance if you choose to do so for risk reduction. Additionally, you don’t always have to undergo a mastectomy with full reconstruction for perfect symmetry. Insurance will pay for a procedure on the non-cancer side, such as a lift, fat grafting, small implant, etc. Your plastic surgeon should explain all of this during your consultation, so you can make the most informed decision about your reconstruction!
