Botox for men is on the rise – and with good reason. The injections are in a league of their own. Not only can they smooth away the deep lines and wrinkles that age the face – but over time, they can also prevent new ones from forming.

How does Botox work?

Botox is a drug that’s produced by botulinum toxin – the neurotoxin that can cause botulism. When used in controlled doses, it prevents the release of acetylcholine, which is an important neurotransmitter. This process blocks the message from your nervous system that tells your muscles to contract. As a result, your muscles relax – and any wrinkles connected to them fade from view.

Botox injections for men tend to be different than those we perform for women. Not only does the facial anatomy differ – but the aesthetic goals are often distinct as well.

To begin, our male patients tend to request injections that preserve their masculine appearance. In many cases, this may mean lightening wrinkles and lines, rather than attempting to erase them completely. We may also leave laugh lines untouched, but treat crow’s feet and frown lines. In addition, because male faces tend to be larger and feature deeper lines, they often require more Botox than women to achieve their desired outcome.

Less is more:

An injection technique for natural results

When our male patients request Botox, they typically want to emerge from our office looking natural – not frozen. In addition to utilizing the smallest amount of Botox necessary to achieve optimal smoothing results, we employ the following technique modifications:

Restraint around the forehead. For male patients specifically, it’s important to address forehead wrinkles and frown lines – without lifting the brow. On women, an arched brow looks natural and feminine. On our male clients, it can create an undesired effect. Using a restrained technique in this area maintains the straight brow, which is distinctly masculine.
Allow for natural movement. Heavy-handed Botox can look frozen – as if the facial muscles are paralyzed. At Austin Face & Body, we perform injections in a way to give you the best of both worlds. We strive to smooth your wrinkles but preserve natural facial movement.

What to expect

Your Botox treatment will be performed in the comfort of our Austin office. To begin, we will evaluate your skin and ask you to make a series of facial expressions so we can determine the precise placement of your injections.

We will then clean the area and inject the Botox directly into the targeted facial muscles. If you’re concerned about pain, we can use ice or a numbing cream to ensure your comfort and minimize swelling.

After your appointment

Botox requires no downtime. As such, you will be free to return to work and your normal daily routine immediately after your appointment. The only instructions are you must avoid rubbing the treated area and wait a full day before engaging in strenuous activity.

Your results will be apparent within four days, and they will reach their peak effect in about two weeks. The treated wrinkles will return within three to four months, at which point you will need another series of injections to preserve your new look.

FAQ

Are there any side effects?

There are a few side effects associated with Botox, but they are rare and temporary. They include eyelid droopiness – which should go away in two weeks – slight bruising, and a headache.
