Ultrasonic piezo rhinoplasty is an advanced technique that uses a motorized device to precisely resize and reshape the nasal structure, with no trauma to the surrounding soft tissues.

Ultrasonic piezo rhinoplasty:

An ultra-precise surgical approach

Traditionally, when plastic surgeons needed to remove excess cartilage and bone to narrow a nose and lower the nasal hump, they’ve used rasps, hammers, and chisels. Although effective, these tools are not perfect – and can sometimes result in trauma to the nasal structure and its surrounding tissues.

Ultrasonic, or piezoelectric, rhinoplasty uses a device that emits high-speed sound waves to tiny cutting and shaving tip inserts. These inserts can precisely shave, smooth, and reduce the nasal bones. This system has been used in oral surgery for many years and has recently been approved as a rhinoplasty system in Europe and the United States.

The benefits

The Piezo System selectively reshapes bones and hard cartilage – while preserving the skin, mucosa, and soft cartilages. This gentle technique results in a host of benefits for our Austin patients, including:

  • Less trauma to the surrounding areas
  • Minimized post-surgical swelling, pain, and bleeding
  • A precise and more predictable cosmetic outcome – which reduces the risk of a revision
  • Intricate sculpting that’s not always possible even with very fine rasps
  • Complements preservation rhinoplasty techniques
  • A precise aesthetic outcome

Is ultrasonic rhinoplasty right for you?

The Piezo System is used for precise nasal bone sculpting. As such, patients who require a reduction or an adjustment to the nasal bones are the best candidates. It’s not suitable for a nasal tip or soft cartilage refinements, as these adjustments require suture and graft techniques.

In the right surgical hands, ultrasonic rhinoplasty can:

  • Narrow the nasal bridge with precision
  • Reduce dorsal humps and bumps
  • Straighten a crooked nose
  • Reduce a large or wide nose
  • Restore balance to an asymmetrical nose

Austin Face & Body:

At the forefront of advanced surgical techniques

All nose surgeries should be performed by a skilled facial plastic surgeon who is well-versed in the most advanced technologies and surgical techniques. Our team of innovators at Austin Face & Body is committed to delivering the best outcomes to our patients – and that often requires the latest technology. During your initial consultation, we will examine your unique anatomy and help you determine if ultrasonic rhinoplasty can obtain the results you want.

The procedure: What to expect

Your ultrasonic rhinoplasty will be done under general anesthesia and should take two to three hours to complete. To begin, we will create an incision along the columella – which is the strip of narrow tissue that separates your nostrils. This is referred to as an “open approach,” and is necessary with the ultrasonic procedure because direct visualization of the bones is required.

Once the incision is made, we will lift the nasal skin to expose the entire nasal bone structure underneath. We will then apply the ultrasound wand using varying tips to remove a nasal hump, create precise bone cuts that preserve the mucosa, and polish rough surfaces to refine the nasal bridge.

Recovery

After ultrasonic rhinoplasty, we will place a nasal splint to support the bones. You will need to sleep with your head elevated and ice the area regularly during the initial healing period.

The splint will be removed about one week later, at which point you should see minimal bruising and swelling, thanks to the gentle nature of this approach. Any subtle swelling will subside over time, and your results will be considered final within one year.

Revolutionizing nose surgery

Traditional rhinoplasty techniques have relied on the same surgical hammer and chisel for the past hundred years. Even in the most capable and experienced hands, these tools can result in excessive bruising, swelling, and trauma to the surrounding tissues. More rarely, they can also be associated with fracture patterns. While experienced plastic surgeons have found ways to reduce these risks, there was a real need for rhinoplasty to evolve with powered instrumentation – and now it has.

With the Piezo system, we can reduce the risk of unwanted fractures and contour abnormalities. Your surgeon will reshape the bone under direct visualization and with unmatched precision – resulting in less bruising, better results, and a faster recovery.
